Determination, Perseverance Spell Business Success
"It was in 1985 when my family life started struggling for survival. Pigpen served as our home; my husband was a fisherman earning money fitted for one day living. I helped him in selling fishes. We walked from Sta. Rosa to San Isidro during the day. It was hard but we never gave up because of our children," recalls Florentina Sanglay, 62, of San Isidro, Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija.

Florentina has been one of the pioneer ASKI clients since it started in 1987. She has been in the individual lending program (ILP) of ASKI. "Our life was full of trials until ASKI came and this was truly a blessing," says Florentina.

She used the money that she got in pursuing her passion. She engaged into dress making business. From a starting capital of P5,000, she bought three sewing machines and employed three regular sewers.

"I was 14 when I started learning how to sew. I used to repair my siblings' clothes until I became an expert. This is why when ASKI offered me a business capital, it was sewing business that popped in my head instantly," Florentina said.

Together with her workers, Florentina used her talent in sewing which produces paired clothes, jogging pants and many others in a day. The business went well; her income doubled and she was able to earn enough for the schooling of her children until problems came in.

Like any other businesses, Florentina also experienced problems. "My patience has been tested when my workers cheated on me. There were times that they sold my products even without my knowledge. The money they got out of it was not given back to me but I have never given that much of attention rather, I took it positively. I still accepted them as workers and showed them that I trusted them," she said.

Her positive views in life made her more successful. Creative that she was, Florentina won loyal customers who patronized her self-branded products.

She was so happy and thankful when her three children earned their masters degrees. "I am proud to say that I was able to have professionals among my children," she proudly said.

With all the hardships that she went through, Florentina is now harvesting the fruits of her investment. She is grateful for all the blessing that she is receiving.

"I am thankful for all the blessings that God has given me. I was able to renovate our house. Now, we can live more comfortably than before. I was able to acquire four high speed sewing machines and one motorcycle. I am more contented with what we have," says Florentina.

She earned a minimum of P20,000 a month. Part of her earnings from the sewing business are being used as capital to their sari-sari store while her

Florentina learned the art of sewing when she was 14 years old. From then on, it has become the family’s bread and butter.

Because of the business, they also acquired a one-half hectare farm land which gave them extra income during cropping season. The ups and downs of her life is a concrete example of life's complexity. Yet she proved how tough she was in facing every battle of her life and this makes her an inspiration to others.

Florentina is just one of the many microentrepreneurs who used her abilities in putting up a business. She has proven that hard working people do succeed. "I really believe that patience is the key not only in business but in living as well," she said.

Florentina added, "We have to have goal in life. Anything you aim for will be yours, at the right time, if you wait for it. So be patient. And most of all, do not forget to do good things to others, even they do things against you."
