ASKI, Metrobank Foundation hold nationwide FinEd trainings to OFW families, communities

ASKI Group of Companies, Inc. and Metrobank Foundation trained a total of 338 OFW families and 257 community members nationwide through the project Metrogold Financial Education for Migrant Workers and their Families and Community Members.

The trainings on financial education kicked-off in June 2019 and finished last January. These were held in Gen. Luna, Quezon, Baguio City, Marilao, Bulacan, Novaliches in Quezon City, Iloilo City and Ajuy, Iloilo, Carmen, Davao Del Norte, Koronadal City and General Santos City.

The participants underwent a 2-hour customized training program that consists of modules on financial management, competence and responsibility aimed at helping them improve their skills and knowledge in budgeting, savings and investments and other financial-related matters and thereby equipping them "to make responsible and sound financial decisions."

The OFW family members or dependents that joined the sessions came from diverse age groups such as students, spouses, parents and relatives. They are expected to "change their spending behavior from cash-based to asset-based transactions" among others.

Asked about the learnings, Mrs. Ginalyn Lumingil from Koronadal City, a former OFW who has two children currently working abroad, shared that one of her learnings is overcoming fear and other emotions to better handle her finances. She added: "Kailangan natin i-handle ang ating mga pera at magkaroon ng proper investments...[We need to handle our finances well and have good investments]."

Another former OFW and now his daughter is working overseas, Mr. Nelson Jumilla, is thankful because he learned a lot such as the value of savings and emergency fund. "Dapat maging habit ang savings...[saving money must be a habit] maging disiplinado pagdating sa paggamit ng pera, hindi iyong mga abrupt o impulsive purchases [be disciplined in using money and not to be impulsive buyer]."

Way forward, ASKI and Metrobank Foundation plan to train 50 migrant workers in Singapore under Financial Education ASKI-Metrobank partnership project, provide microloans to OFW families and conduct coaching and mentoring sessions among the OFW families who will avail microfinance within the areas of ASKI's operations.
